Participatory Photography in Kenya

Alexa Boldt Photography

This project utilized the communication method of participatory photography in the town of Mbita, Kenya. It took place in the former Nyanza Province, now Homa Bay County. During the month of November 2013, six primary students learned basic principles of photography and chose topics to create six eight-piece photosets that would catalyze dialogue among their community while sharing them at a gallery showing. This study determined the effectiveness of training students in photography to visually portray a message, evaluated the effectiveness of photographs as a communication tool within a community, and assessed the community reception of photographed topics.
